why bali aquaponics?

Michael Hensel is from Hamburg in Germany, the land of innovation and technology. He was first inspired when taking an impact trip in South East Asia and witnessing the unnecessary food crisis in communities in places such as Cambodia and Sri Lanka.

He then created the Koya Project, a way empower schools and communities suffering from food insecurity, water scarcity, poor soil and extreme levels of poverty, with the self-sustaining food production education of aquaponics technology.

Two years ago, Michael moved to Ubud Bali where he could be closer to the communities he served and sourced further inspiration from his surroundings and the vast types of agriculture and traditional growing practices that come from Bali itself.  In many countries around the world, including Germany the capacity to grow best produce has become limited. Michael has seen a way doing his part

Michael was then further inspired after winning the contract to build an Aquaponics Island at the Pyramids of Chi, a famous healing center in Ubud, Bali that sees over 30,000 visitors per year.

You will also see Michael’s recent works at the Tony Raka Art Lounge, where contemporary and traditional art meets innovation.

Since then Michael has gone on to win hotel contracts around the world, featured in European vegan magazines and become a key innovator in the world of Aquaponics. He is revered for creating German designed and Bali inspired aquaponic growing systems in both Bali and around the world.

Bali Aquaponics simply means artful design with optimal functionality.

bali aquaponics core principles

we help you to grow fresh and organic fruits, herbs, & vegetables

we help you to beautifully design, build and effectively maintain your own self-sustaining food production system

You’ll discover how to leverage aquaponics to travel the world, make a positive impact and have fun doing it!
‘I always wondered why most systems are not beautifully and elegantly designed.

Was it the extra cost involved, or was it a lack of imagination and or design skills?

One of my personal goals became making aquaponics more aesthetically pleasing, so that more people would be drawn to it. In the Bali Aquaponics course, one of our key focuses will be on design’. MH
One of the most attractive reasons to learn aquaponics is to be able to grow your own chemical and pesticide-free food at home. Knowing where your food is coming from gives the peace of mind that your food is safe.

Many to today’s illnesses and ailments come from poor quality food choices, sometimes due to accessibility.

Growing your own food is a big first step toward living a healthy lifestyle for you and your family’. MH
When I started the Koya Project in 2016, I had found a way to combine my love of travel with aquaponics.

With this course, I want to give my students the opportunity to use your new found knowledge to be able to travel and help people in need.

The students of this course will have the opportunity to get paid by the KoyaProject to help build systems in developing countries’.
In this way, aquaponics becomes an artistic and healthy way to eat better and create a global lifestyle that gives back to the world.

We’ll also discuss in-depth the different nutrient needs of various plants.

This week also contains a little math – but don’t worry, it will be fun. During this week, you will calculate different system scenarios, and learn exactly how to calculate the balance between fish and plants. You’ll learn to design the perfect water flow. These are important calculations and design considerations to understand before you can start designing your first system. This week will be important in terms of understanding the scope of a system in total. It will help you achieve complete confidence in your understanding of the way an aquaponics system works, which is important before next week’s design class.

Ways to make money with your system designs.

In the fifth week, you will learn all about plant nutrients and water testing.

One of the most important things to learn is what happens after you build your system.

You can have the design correct, the water flows correct, the right fish and plants – but if your pH is too low or too high, or if you don’t have the right nutrients, all your hard work could be for nothing- or worse, your clients will be upset that the plants are not growing.

This week’s goal is to give you the knowledge and tools to ensure that none of that ever happens

We will dive deeply into nutrient needs, water quality, and how to assure your system will be healthy.  You will be able to test and adjust your system properly when things aren’t going right.

You’ll also learn simple calculations that will give the answers you need to keep a system running optimally at all time.

You acquire the knowledge necessary to observe any system, determine its health, and know how to fix nutrient deficiencies and other issues to keep it running optimally.

At the end of this week you will have the final exam. It will not be a multiple answers test, but a real detailed comprehensive test of your knowledge – as your exam will be a project where you design a working aquaponics system.

With your successfully completed final project, you will graduate – Congratulations! You will receive a beautiful certificate designating you as a Bali Aquaponics Master, along with a commemorative plaque.

You will have the opportunity to be hired as an aquaponics master for the KoyaProject – as well as being able to become an aquaponics consultant for the Aquaponics Design Company in Los Angeles, CA
